Built pedagogy

Built pedagogy is the principle that a learning space is never neutral — its architecture, furniture, light, and technology quietly teach, encoding a way of learning before a word is spoken. I design spaces where that hidden curriculum works for the learner.

Walk into a room of desks bolted toward a board and you already know the lesson: sit still, face front, receive. Change the room — movable tables, writable walls, no fixed front — and the same students start to talk, build, and teach each other. The space is the pedagogy. Design one deliberately and you've designed the learning.

Fixed rows
One voice, one direction — space that trains compliance and transmission.
Flexible clusters
No fixed front, movable tables, writable walls — space that invites collaboration and inquiry.

What I've built

Studio AIR

IISER Bhopal · India's first of its kind
Studio AIR classroom: circular tables with tablets, an overhead cluster of 65-inch displays, writable walls, and a central instructor kiosk.
Circular tables, per-table tablets, and a suspended cluster of 65″ displays.

Adaptive · Immersive · Responsive. India's first technology-enabled AIR classroom, inspired by MIT's TEAL. I designed and delivered it 0→1 — personally sourcing every piece of equipment and furniture and tuning every detail: lighting, acoustics, engineering, software, table shapes and sizes, chair ergonomics. No piece left unturned, so the whole space becomes one seamless fabric where teachers and students come to collaborate and learning feels natural rather than staged. Above all, it was designed with empathy — for how teachers actually teach and how each learner actually learns — so the classroom meets the needs of the individual, not just the average.

CREATES Learning Lab

IISER Bhopal · configurable studio

A free-form, moldable studio built to be reshaped in minutes. Square tables and chairs on castors reconfigure from lecture rows to problem-solving clusters to a full circle; ten glass boards ring the walls so every table has a surface within reach. Purpose-built for active-cooperative pedagogy, flipped classrooms, and tutorials — with a light-board studio for recording lectures.

Consulting & impact

Somaiya Vidyavihar University

Mumbai · 2021

Advised senior leadership on modernizing the university's teaching-learning infrastructure — designing a flagship adaptive-immersive-responsive learning studio and recommending cost-effective, high-engagement upgrades for existing classrooms, all guided by built-pedagogy principles.

NITTTR Bhopal

Nat'l Inst. of Technical Teachers' Training & Research · 2021–2022

Consulted on creating modern learning spaces compliant with built-pedagogy principles — bringing active-cooperative, technology-enabled design to teacher-training infrastructure.

How I can contribute

01

Design spaces 0→1

From concept and pedagogy to sourcing, engineering, and delivery — a complete learning space, not just a floor plan.

02

Review & rate existing spaces

Audit classrooms, libraries, and common areas against space, layout, furnishing, technology, and social setup — with a rating system and prioritized fixes.

03

Cost-effective upgrades

High-engagement improvements — pen displays, casting, writable surfaces — without locking into expensive, short-lived proprietary hardware.

04

Train faculty to teach in them

A space only works if teachers can wield it. I train faculty on the pedagogy and the tools together, so the room gets used the way it was designed.
